The area of southeast Poland & nothwest Jkraine has been source of friction for centuries, Ukraine can settle to their advantage by joing up with Russia. Then Poland would not dare mess with Russia the worlds nuclesr Super Power. Ukrainians you must know that you & the Russians ade identical people. Same DNA, Orthodox religion, same alphabet ., same history, same enemies
surely the single part of Ukraine that Russia absolutely does not want under any circumstances is W Ukraine/former Poland. Nazis with easy support from nato.
The ideal solution for Russia is for it to become part of Poland and in nato. Then any strikes on russian land can be countered with a simple threat to nuke or at least iskander Warsaw. problem dealt with - by Poles. Poland would be the competent and rational leadership that Russia has wished on Ukraine for centuries (and largely till the Brits and Americans got their hands on it).
I am curious on one point. Andrew says ' Ukrainian nationalist historiography treats the interwar period as an “imperial occupation”, '
I thought the region had always been part of Poland and or the Austro-Hungarian empire for centuries and only part of Ukraine post 1945.
Poland doesn’t want the region as I explained in this piece, and Ukrainian historiography considers the beginning of Polish control over today’s Western Ukraine in the mid-14th century to be the start of Poland’s “occupation” of their lands.
Aha - Thanks - so not so much interwar - as two thirds of a millenium.
Ukrainian historiography is, well, Zionist in scale.
I agree Poland should not want the region, and would worry greatly about close relatives in Poland. But Poland has a big army that is not going to be fighting Russia whatever anyone says, and some kind of external security for W Ukraine is going to be desperately needed. Much sooner than anyone expects I think.
All good points. Too many live in a fantasy world.

Which of us is wrong? (me or the historiography?)

Eastern Lesser Poland was used before the restoration of Polish independence, but it became much more popularly known during the interwar period.
There also wasn't ever a serious Ukrainian independence movement till after World War I, which ended with Poland and the USSR "partitioning" Ukraine.
So the context in which they consider the interwar period an "occupation" refers to their failed independence movement and incorporation into Poland.
