Kazakhstan has the same problem as Azerbaijan: a small population and attentive neighbors to the south.

If Azerbaijan (10 million inhabitants) finds itself in a Russian-Iranian pincer, neither NATO nor Turkey will come to its aid. The distance of that pincer would be less than 200 km. So it's certain: Aliyev and the too-compromised "elites" would go live happy and lavish days in the West, but the problem of the southern border and even of Central Asia would be solved.

As for Kazakhstan, for a vast territory of plains bordered by thousands of kilometers of border with Russia and China, the country has only 14 million Kazakhs to oppose. No one in the West will go to die for this country. And to the south, Uzbekistan would probably be delighted to gain access to the Caspian Sea and Russia, and Kyrgyzstan to expand to Lake Balkhash.

This is a very dangerous game played by the potentates of these countries.

Now, if their people follow them down this perilous path, this path what will be followed.

Andrew - thanks for sharing this insightful analysis.

A couple of weeks ago there were reports that Kazakhstan had agreed to halt shipments of pipeline oil via Russia to Europe, and to Germany in particular.

If these reports were correct, what, in your view, is going on here?

Thanks.
