It is difficult to sort out the state of mind of Ukrainian decision makers. They can have hidden guarantees in the background from the European segment of NATO or they can also engage in hopeless missions to influence the negotiations. The Russian –Ukraine border areas cannot be fully defended against a sudden concentration of Ukraine forces. However, on the long run, these attempts will increasingly turn into suicide missions for the Ukraine military. Russian forces are so overwhelming by now that their main operations and strategy will not be redirected by these Ukraine intrusions.

ISW’s April 7th, 2025 report (1) mentions Russian advances in Belogorod Oblast. This site is heavily leaning toward the pro-Ukraine in their narratives. In Kursk Oblast there were further Russian advance pushing Ukrainian forces closer and closer to the border. They also published a report (2) on April 8, 2025 titled: Russian Occupation Update, April 8, 2025. This report is focused on Russian occupational tactics in the territories already taken over, Belogorod is not mentioned.

The April 7th report says: “Russian forces recently advanced in Belogorod Oblast and near Siversk, Toretsk, Pokrovsk, and Velyka Novosilka and in western Zaporizhia Oblast.” The map of the Belogorod Oblast area shows an insignificant, small area taken by Ukraine that is already shrinking.
