I do think the US military has a very strong desire to grab that airbase, but not necessarily for the so-called strategic value (reconnaissance and electronic listening). How about using it as a huge money pit? Ditto for Diego Garcia. Few people can go to these places unless one has deep ties with the military. Soldiers need this and that supply, everything needs transportation, CIA needs to protect routes for safe passage, etc. Such expenses benefits not only ammo manufacturers, but more so on military contractors. In comparison, the Ukraine War so far benefits mostly weapon and munition contractors. It is the Army guys who got most of the loot. The Air Force and Navy need their loot as well.
