"Kremlin confirms Russia paused Ukraine strikes at Trump’s request"

Yes, it's time to preserve preciously ashes to put in hair and a blanket to wrap around waist.

In the end, it was true? Poutine really has been trapped in Ukraine? The 22/2/22 was a throw of dices? A desperate throw of dice? All those who said that 22/2/22 was the Pearl Harbour moment of Russia were true?

If all of that is true, nobody on this earth can yet perceive what kind of hell will become our world in this 21th century.

Sic transit Gloria mundi.

That said, end of 20th century was heaven for us, the golden billion. For the six other billions it was already hell.

Stupid Putin thought he could pull off another "Georgia" in Ukraine, but this time the ZioWest was ready and waiting. Putin is geo-pollical idiot.

General Ripper1964's avatar

If I were the Russians, ANY NATO/US TROOPS IN UKRAINE would be seen as NATO "lite ". As an American, I would not be keen on Ukraine and NATO dragging us into a war. All Ukraine has to do is start oppressing the Russian ethnic groups in their territory and it's on like Donkey Kong. Armistice like Korea could last decades or never end. Ideally, control over Odessa and the north shore of the Black Sea protects Sebastopol and Russian freedom of navigation in the Black Sea. There has to be some agreement on weapons systems in the Ukrainian Area Of Operations.

Russias too resource rich 4 western oligarchs to leave it be especially given western europe is cooked.

If there is a peace it'll be the usual US/EU peace where its merely a pause to re-arm, possibly with nukes this time.

Darras's avatar

Andrew, I really hope you're wrong thought I fear you're right .

If a "peace" is made only on those disastrous basis, that mean Russia lost this war, hundreds thousands of Russians have been killed for nothing. Situation in Ukraine will be worse for Russia than before the war.

If it happen, Russia will loose all its international credibility, will be always victim of western harassment till it collapse or/and split in small countries.

Poutine will loose his prestige. The western faction will criticize more and loudly the useless slaughter of Russian lives and the dead end of a sovereign policy. The turbo patriot will shout at treason, the families and friends of dead and the seriously injured will be furious. Like a big part of army and former soldiers.

Further, if Russia agree this shit, that mean the terrible weakness and isolation of Russia, and that explain the disgrace of Lavrov, true patriot, and the victory of western faction.

It would be over for Russia.

Empire stroke back ..and won

I really hope that Andrew is wrong...

Judging from so many actions the highest priority of Russia is to save the country from going into an all encompassing major conflict that has the potential to risk the economic and domestic political stability. Russia wants to avoid full mobilization as this would interrupt the normal flow of everyday life. Putin will make very substantial compromises to stick to these guidelines while secure the position of the Russian minority inside Ukraine. He might even make territorial concessions as long as the issue is over unoccupied territories.

The fact that Russia was able to stabilize the economy and fight this demanding war after losing European exports in large part reflects on a skilled, calculated leadership. They cannot restrain Ukraine from bringing in small numbers of NATO personal in civilian clothing. On the other hand because of the large protected Russian minority there, they will be able to keep an eye on the whole of Ukraine; nothing will pass by them unnoticed.

The situation in Ukraine will be unstable for decades possibly, therefore I do not see multibillion dollar investments flowing in there.

Darras's avatar

Yes, and Santa Klaus will come next 24th December.

Have you seen how the majority of russian speaking Ukrainians have watched the whole country since 1990?

Where you see wisdom and smart leadership, there's only terrible weakness and failure.

Poutine don't need a general mobilisation, but if needed, he MUST do it. I don't know what Russians are thinking , because I'm lost among propaganda from everywhere, but I think that a big part of them will be revolted by such a mouse end after a mountain of sacrifice.

But sure, while Russians die in mud, other Russians drink champagne in Courchevel. With the children of ukrainian wealthiest?

Yes we are truly in 21th century.

Kennewick Man's avatar

And one more thing: Russian money in Brussels will be also discussed publicly or maybe privately there.

Deplorable Commissar's avatar

" Russia wants to avoid full mobilization as this would interrupt the normal flow of everyday life. "

Why would it need full mobilization against Ukraine? Additionally, if Russia entered a conflict, where full mobilization was needed, that would mean it was an existential battle, at which point, there would be no "normal" life to preserve.

So can we finally drop the comforting fantasy that Ukraine is on the brink of collapse?

Darras's avatar

Ukraine is a zombi. Already dead. It's foreign countries which pay for the operation of state. It's foreign countries which provide weapons and almost. It's foreign countries which provide intelligence and ISR.

Ukraine is a living dead. If west unplug, Ukraine can't survive.

Feral Finster's avatar

That may be, but the propped up Ukraine continues to fight.

Darras's avatar

Yes, it keep on dying and being destroyed.

Yeaaah!!

Feral Finster's avatar

Nobody cares. A farmer doesn't mourn the deaths of his chickens.

Darras's avatar

Reason why I've written " who care?"

Darras's avatar

Who care about Ukraine?

This ‘settlement’ is quite close to the plans outlined by Hegseth, Kellogg, and other Trump officials over the past year. A truce would freeze the conflict along existing divisions. Both sides would treat the fronts as de facto borders, while Ukraine would replace its troops with ‘neutral’ monitors in the Donbas’. In return, Ukraine would sign liberal economic deals with the West and obtain informal (quasi-‘Article V’) security backups. Overall, I see little reason to judge this ‘peace’ as anything other than a setback to Russia’s aims, as it a) legalizes NATO’s military aegis in Ukraine and b) falls short of Russia’s original territorial goals. There is also no way for Russia to stop the EU from using the ‘peace’ to rebuild Ukraine’s armed forces or devising false flags to resume the war. (Trump’s moves in the Arctic are far from reassuring to Russia’s long-term safety.) Ukraine has lost a lot, but that Russia was unable to impose its will on a weaker neighbor says even more.

LJones's avatar

I want to embrace this hope, but it still seems to require one to believe that a part of the US govt is acting outside of political authority. Or was it someone else that tried to kill Putin?

Regis Tremblay's avatar

If Putin compromises on any of his three major goals for the SMO he's in big time trouble with the Russian people who believed him and sacrificed tens of thousands of their fathers, sons, and daughters in this fight for their security and survival of the Motherland.

Ike Yeadon's avatar

He's doing great, Rege. "Demilitarization" of Ukraine got you the largest military in Europe, seasoned as fuck. Something-something NATO - you bought yourself Finland and Sweden in NATO, and the new, improved Baltic Sea.

What was the third? Some babble about "Nazis." Ask Rusich and every other neo-nazi group in Russia.

ironicskeptic's avatar

«If Putin compromises on any of his three major goals for the SMO he's in big time trouble with the Russian people who believed him and sacrificed tens of thousands of their fathers, sons, and daughters in this fight»

There is a big difference in attitudes between working-class russians whose relatives fight in the SMO and the liberal middle-class in big cities who dream of vassalization to "the west" to get offshore jobs with Shell, Google, Siemens, Goldman-Sachs, Facebook, AstraZeneca, etc.

In particular the latter want butter, not guns, or at worst a guns-and-butter policy, which is what Putin is trying to give them and Nabiullina is trying to undermine.

On foto liberal Peskov 😂 end Krypto maffia together. My god Ukraine war is destructief for white Slavic people. The show mast go !!!!! Putin is liberale then liberals in the west same power of jong global leaders . Al war are bankers end oligarch war you don’t have freedom in this fucking world is al lies your live is illusion is the game end you can play in this game , democracy, religion end country are fake your live in the fake world is not made for people bat ruling Klaas of oligarch end extreme ideology of Abrachmic feodalisme technocrats.

Valerie Eisman's avatar

If the Russian people want the war to end, that's all that matters. It's the judgment of the Russian people that counts at the end of the day. I see no point in spilling more blood if the Russian people feel enough has been spilled.

Valerie Eisman's avatar

What NATO country could possibly be considered a "neutral" by Russia?

ironicskeptic's avatar

«Zelensky remains defiant about withdrawing from Donbass.»

He cannot say otherwise officially but he and some people around him have said that *withdrawing* is possible but recognizing *formally* RF sovereignty over the Donbass will never happen.

The ukrainian position seems to be that the Donbass does not belong to the people of the Donbass but to the ruthenian people of Lvov and Kiev because the people of the Donbass are mixed-mongol invaders who stole those lands from pure aryan ruthenians only a few hundreds years go and have been squatting illegally in those lands since then, and the right to self-determination is not applicable to invading inferior races.

Walter DuBlanica's avatar

what will this end up being?? Russia & Ukrainians are identical peolple. Russia has a 1200 mile border wkith Ukraine. That this is This is just scratching the surface. . Russia & Ukra i ne owill WILL beome ONE BIG COUNTRY.

ironicskeptic's avatar

«Russia & Ukrainians are identical peolple.»

The ruthenians (who started to call themselves "ukrainians" as a trick only 100 years ago) and the russians are somewhat different culturally, religiously and even ethnically (the ruthenians in particular are proud to be pure aryans).

http://ww2today.com/1-march-1944-the-red-army-marches-across-ukraine

«The population welcomed us warmly, regardless of how hard it was for them to provide food to soldiers; they always found some nice treats — some villagers boiled chicken, others boiled potatoes and cut lard (soldiers dubbed this kind of catering ‘a grandmother’s ration’).

However, such attitudes were common only in the Eastern Ukraine. As soon as we entered the Western Ukraine, that had passed to the Soviet Union from Poland in 1940, the attitude of the population was quite different — people hid from us in their houses, as they disliked and feared the Muscovites and Kastaps [a disparaging name for Russians in Ukraine – translators comment]. Besides that, those places were Bandera areas, where the nationalistic movement was quite strong.»

«I even found my family on the internet! I found my mother's 88 year old sister which meant I could go back to Ukraine as an insider not just a tourist. I really saw both halves of the country that way; westward-looking Kiev which is Catholic and very different from the east, which is a lot closer to the Soviet Union. A lot of people speak Russian in the east so in Ukraine there are two very disparate cultures in one country.»

" A country that started this war "

Technically, and legally, Russia started this war. Which was the dumbest move Putin could have done.

Velociraver's avatar

Fair enough, but doesn't the responsibility for creating the conditions of invasion fall on Zelenskyy, who was elected by his people on a promise to maintain neutrality, and enact the Minsk agreements, and then did exactly the opposite due to pressure from neo-Nazi elements? Didn't Zelenskyy then double down, refusing g the peace deal brokered by Bennett at BoJo's behest?

Ukraine authored it's own demise, with USA and UK leading it by a ring in it's nose.

Let's not pretend that USA wouldn't invade Mexico at the drop of a sombrero if they cut a deal to start hosting DPRK or Chinese troops to help with their narco problems, for example. Realpolitik is a thing.

Deplorable Commissar's avatar

Your points are all valid, but to the general world public, Russia is the "aggressor" .

Velociraver's avatar

Sure, just as USA is the aggressor in Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Iran, Iraq (2x), Somalia, Afghanistan, Hawaii, Syria, Guatemala, Brazil, Laos, Cambodia, Angola and about 80 other nations invaded by USA to the tune of a death toll in the neighborhood of some 10 Million-odd people at a conservative estimate.

Again, Realpolitik is a thing.

Deplorable Commissar's avatar

Very true, but the US always lines up a "coalition" and justification before going in. Why is that ?

Velociraver's avatar

Yes, USA does have a reliable stable of vassal states that are coerced into the cheerleading squad. This is evident at every UNGA vote.

You think it proves...what?

Feral Finster's avatar

Right has nothing to do with it. This is a question of power.

Nothing more.

Wolf: you spoke ill of me last year

Lamb: ho no sir, impossible, I was not born

Wolf: mmh. If it's not you it's your brother.

lamb: but ...I have no brother.

Wolf: ok, ok, so it's was one of your family.

Lamb: it's all dead.

Wolf: ok, ok, but you and your friend bother me.

And he eat the lamb.

Might makes right.
