Between 1952 and 1963, the United Kingdom, with the "agreement" of the Australian Government, conducted a series of nuclear weapons tests in Australia. These included 12 full-scale atomic bomb detonations and around 600 “minor trials” involving radioactive materials and bomb components. The detonation sites are Maralinga, Emu Field and Montebello Island. Currently the US military has use of Australian B-52 capable airfields, naval bases and the military intelligence facility at Pine Gap. USA continues to neither confirm nor deny that nuclear devices are carried to or through Australian territory.
