“If our ally across the pond wants European assistance, then a minimum of respect would require consultation on these matters in advance, not when problems arise.” Nevertheless, he also added that “If we, as Europe, do not help the Americans, then it will be difficult to expect American support later. Later, when help is needed in Europe, Trump can say, ‘I needed help, [but] you gave me the middle finger, so now don’t expect me to help you’.” It’s unclear, however, what Polish support he has in mind.

In any case, it’s significant that the rival halves of the country’s political duopoly agreed not to comply with the US’ reported Patriot transfer request, though their rationale is questionable. It was explained last month that “The EU Poses A Much More Credible Threat To Russia Than The Inverse”, but the aforesaid duopoly is obsessed with the fantasy of a Russian invasion, ergo their insistence in holding onto to Poland’s Patriots. The perceived threat posed by Russia is the one thing that unites them.

They differ over how best to address it, but both agree that the Patriots are required, thus explaining this rare convergence of interests. Circling back to Rzeczpospolita’s article, it concluded by calling for more domestic military-industrial development, which alludes to how “Poland’s Military-Industrial Complex Is Embarrassingly Underdeveloped” since its air defense needs can only be satisfied by others. While progress is being made on changing that, it’s honestly not a lot, and this makes Poland vulnerable.

Earlier this year, the Washington Post implied that “Poland’s Military Build-Up Might Have Ultimately Been For Nothing” since it focused on conventional arms purchases while the Ukrainian Conflict shows the new importance of drones, so Poland is even more vulnerable than many imagine. This insight challenges the country’s portrayal of itself as a rising power in Central & Eastern Europe. Left unsaid is that the US benefits from Poland’s vulnerabilities since they make Poland more dependent on the US.
