This would all be moot, of course, should Ukraine suddenly cease to exist. But never mind. The EU is pretty good at fiddling while Rome burns. Or, in this case perhaps, Kiev.

There is another aspect to expanding the EU member states: the cost of integration. The policy is presented as a geopolitical necessity, but it introduces potentially large fiscal and debt-sharing exposures for a Union already stretched by high public debt, an €800 billion defence build-up, and ongoing Ukraine support packages for which there is currently no funding.
