Growing up with my grandparents, I remember reading the morning newspaper with my grandfather (Opa since I was raised by him and my grandmother, Oma, who are Gottschers, a subgroup of Germanics) and reading about Russia.
It really resonated with me how Russia was even then mildly, beginning only with diplomatic statements, pushing back against certain US policies abroad that I felt were unfair. I then began independently researching Russia.
Before we had the Internet at home, we had a collection of 1970s-something encyclopedias that my mom won during a spelling bee when she was younger, so I used that to learn about Russia, the Soviet Union, and various other things.
Around 6th grade or so I think it was, maybe 7th, we then started learning about the (Old) Cold War, and it fascinated me that Russia (then the USSR) was more or less the world's geopolitical equal and challenged it everywhere.
I at one time was attracted to leftism, socialism, communism, but no longer, though it still further intrigued me about Russia that the US had this de facto equal, the largest country in the world, with such a different political system.
I had also learned on my own about the USSR's socio-cultural richness and it was always so interesting to me that it encompassed Orthodox Slavs, Muslim Turkic people, and so many other ethno-national groups.
When I began high school, sometimes during lunch I'd eat quickly then go to the library before time ran out, not just to discuss works of fiction with the librarians, but sometimes to use the Internet to read RIA Novosti.
As it turned out, I later worked for the umbrella company that RIA Novosti eventually fell under, Rossiya Segodnya, but under its Sputnik branch (formerly Voice of Russia radio). That was an extra special blessing from God in my life.

Growing up with my grandparents, I remember reading the morning newspaper with my grandfather (Opa since I was raised by him and my grandmother, Oma, who are Gottschers, a subgroup of Germanics) and reading about Russia.
It really resonated with me how Russia was even then mildly, beginning only with diplomatic statements, pushing back against certain US policies abroad that I felt were unfair. I then began independently researching Russia.
Before we had the Internet at home, we had a collection of 1970s-something encyclopedias that my mom won during a spelling bee when she was younger, so I used that to learn about Russia, the Soviet Union, and various other things.
Around 6th grade or so I think it was, maybe 7th, we then started learning about the (Old) Cold War, and it fascinated me that Russia (then the USSR) was more or less the world's geopolitical equal and challenged it everywhere.
I at one time was attracted to leftism, socialism, communism, but no longer, though it still further intrigued me about Russia that the US had this de facto equal, the largest country in the world, with such a different political system.
I had also learned on my own about the USSR's socio-cultural richness and it was always so interesting to me that it encompassed Orthodox Slavs, Muslim Turkic people, and so many other ethno-national groups.
When I began high school, sometimes during lunch I'd eat quickly then go to the library before time ran out, not just to discuss works of fiction with the librarians, but sometimes to use the Internet to read RIA Novosti.
As it turned out, I later worked for the umbrella company that RIA Novosti eventually fell under, Rossiya Segodnya, but under its Sputnik branch (formerly Voice of Russia radio). That was an extra special blessing from God in my life.
Anyhow, what I wanted to relate was my lifelong passion for Russia, which has evolved even further since I moved here in 2013. I've always wanted to convey what this country really is, how it go to this point, and what it could still become.
