I believe that trend is inevitable given the US's fundamental national strategy. Japan's attitude is critical. So far as I can observe, the differences between Japanese elites and the general public are not that big on the Russia matter. I think Putin has tried to run a bargain too tight for Japan's comfort. For Russia to manage the "new" positional alignment (actually, I think it has never changed since WW2), Russia will really have to develop Siberia and Russia's Far East through domestic migration. In other words, move some of the money invested in Moscow (say, spending on the grandiose subway station) to the Far East. Say, granting a free apartment in the Russian Far East rather than in Moscow for the Ukraine War veterans. If that is not enough, a general income tax exemption for people living there for ten years.

Andrew, with all due respect and esteem I have for you, I am more than fed up with these cardboard "experts" from Valdai. Their only language is that of fear and submission.

Putin should send them all to a labor camp for a while to teach them the realities of life again.

Russia is a victim of deadly harassment, and these buffoons recommend always retreating, keeping a low profile, and being afraid of their own shadow.

No, these islands were ceded by a WRITTEN treaty by the Allies to the USSR in exchange for its commitment against Japan exactly three months to the day after peace in Europe. Even horribly wounded, Russia kept its word. Its crushing defeat of the Japanese genocidaires and its beginning of the invasion of Japanese territory is what hastened Japan's surrender to the USA far more than Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

Fed up with these vulture experts, capitulators, whiners, cowards, and self-interested types. Russia needs courage, resolution, valor, not whining old women in their tea salons.
