If Russia can can arrange Zelenskys removal than the Kremlin can claim they achieved a major goal of the SMO, plus it strikes me as highly unlikely that they would approve assanating highly connected Ukrainians as that would make the West even more enthusiastic about retaliating in kind and the people running Russia value their lives way too much for that. Therefore this being inner Ukrainian feuding seems way more likely, killing Parubiy lets Zelenskys competition know that he is not going anywhere without a serious fight and none of them are untouchable no matter how many American Alphabet Agency Friends they have.

Fully agreed, removing Zelensky or at least placing him on the path to removal (ex: he announces elections, in which he might not run, for right before or sometime shortly after a ceasefire/peace treaty) would be spun as achieving a SMO goal and distract from not achieving many -- if any -- of the officially declared goals (ex: demilitarization, etc.).

Sometimes, there are good news. That news made my day.

I wonder what Parubiy knew about the downing of MH17?

Feral Finster's avatar

It doesn't matter. Parubyi could be on video shooting down MH17 and then bragging about it, and Russia still will blamed.

Praise Dear Leader's avatar

It couldn't be the mountains of evidence showing what happened. Or the sloppily altered satellite images and audio captures Russia tried to use to blame Ukranians. Or the amateurishly doctored video they foisted on investigators, after their other screwups. Or their repeatedly changing accounts of the incident.

Richard Thomas's avatar

Once again the question must be asked; "Cui Bono?". Malaysia was excluded from the Hauge Investigation, as was Russia. The Ukrainian SU25 pilot, Voloshin, who was present and witnessed the 'shoot down', left the UAF and committed suicide three years later. It was a typical 'brute force provocation' of the type America is a past master of, couple this with the corrupt Nazi regime in Kiev and the weight of guilt leans towards the regime.

Praise Dear Leader's avatar

Malaysia was excluded, until it wasn't. Sorry Dick/Mate, but I don't stroke with fascists or their admirers.

Richard Thomas's avatar

I had a colleague/friend who perished along with his three young grandchildren on MH17. . . Madam, think/believe what you like, the truth will out eventually.

Finius Hill's avatar

Not a fascist, an out and out swastika wearing Nazi. A murderer of peaceful demonstrators because Nuland's Color Revolution script called for violence to push a coup. The Jews of our State Department thought they were clever backing this POS. A million Ukrainians are now dead. That's a real holocaust. They are accessories to mass murder.

Feral Finster's avatar

It doesn't matter who did it. Russia will be blamed.

Mediocrates's avatar

Maybe an inside job from perverse ultra-nationalists designed to increase opposition to Zelensky prior to reversing the outcome of 2014 Maidan, thus favouring the Banderites?

Boris Petrov's avatar

Wasn’t he behind recent well organized protests against Zelensky?

barnabus's avatar

I don't think that Zelensky's removal is on top of Russian agenda. It would have been easy if it were intended.

With Parubiy - I think it is more a removal of an inconvenient witness or an inconvenient political leader. With the Ukrainian State losing some or most of the Russophone regions, the political make-up of future Ukraine will be different then from the situation pre 2022.

On a similar note - the principal reason for the poltical estrangement between Britain and its American colonies after the 7 years (French & Indian ) war, was that the ruling faction in the then British parliament did not want to become minority by admitting American representatives.

You seem to be the most credible reporter and analyst I have read so, if it is not too much time, I would appreciate your view on Euromaidan. I did not find your analysis in your substack. Did I miss it?

I have read two diametrically opposed views:

1) The virulently anti-Russian Timothy Snyder's view that Euromaidan Coup was a spontaneous, populist revolt against then President Viktor Yanukovych and Wikipedia which says " The protests were sparked by President Viktor Yanukovych's sudden decision not to sign the European Union–Ukraine Association Agreement, instead choosing closer ties to Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union." , or;

2) this was engineered coup by US State Department, with help from US and European intelligence agencies (deep state implacably hostile to Russia

Additionally Jeffrey Sachs (in YouTube podcasts and elsewhere) makes the case that President Putin has real and legitimate points, i.e. that the US State Department wanted offensive and even nuclear weapons on Russia's border and wanted regime change in Russia, that is, they want Pres. Putin and his allies ousted for reasons not clear to me.

Scott Horton in Provoked justifies Pres. Putin's action.

Horton seems ideologically opposed to war and may exaggerate but if 80% of what he says is true, the US is wrong in supporting a continued war. It appears that, at this time, according to Horton, it is Ukrainian intransigence by Russian hating, committed, racial supremacist NAZIS, who want to finish what Hiter started, that are prolonging the war. and European intransigency Please give me your view which, in my view, is sympathetic to Russia and, at the same time, detailed and factual.

"virulently anti-russian" - that's funny, from a virulent santorum guzzler - the frothier, the better.

Robert R Guzzardi's avatar

??????? Santorum? How is Santorum involved?

Boris Petrov's avatar

Maidan coup was always a CIA war against Russia

Mary Makary's avatar

CIA is awfully good at what they do then, turning out 500K to 700K people every Sunday. They fomented all of that! Impressive!

Boris Petrov's avatar

Many protesters were obviously military men - that likely indicates inside job by Zelensky

Mary Makary's avatar

He was in 4 or 5 films released in 2013 and 2014, 8 episodes of 'Love in Vegas,' and 157 episodes of 'Skazochnaya Rus' (2013 to 2017).

I like how plausibility is irrelevant here.

Robert R Guzzardi's avatar

How do you know that? What is the evidence? It is hard to believe that Maidan was spontaneous. I would like specific facts.

Mary Makary's avatar

You go to the barber, you get a haircut, Bob. What did you come to Z-land to hear? Why is it hard to believe?

Boris Petrov's avatar

Maybe a misunderstanding. Obviously Majdan was not spontaneous

Robert R Guzzardi's avatar

Thank you. helpful information

Mary Makary's avatar

That "Zelensky did it" comment you "liked" defies logic. You're not WPB Bob Guzzardi, unless you're participating from your dementia care facility.

Because circumstances say it was not Ruskies doing the cadavering, it could very well be that Ruskies made him a cadaver. A plausible deniability.

Bu then...

Could it be that Seppps are cleaning the septic tank of floaters, preparing it for elections - to prevent foul smell spoiling it, figuratively said?

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Chinese Communists engaged in a series of political assassinations in Eastern China, especially around Shanghai. The targets included government officials, media moguls, all the way to rich businessmen. Some survived by paying ransoms (if abducted or threatened). Many scholars of the history of Chinese Communists attributed the strategy to the fact that the first wave of rebellion riots were defeated (around the city of Nanchang) or smashed (elsewhere). By then, the Chinese Communists were short of money, arms, and men. The first thing was to get money (the USSR did provide funding, but not enough).

Today's Ukraine is certainly different from the Chinese Communists in the 1930s. A military defeat is a common theme. Assassinations can be used for political infighting, for killing off those who get soft or have secret contacts with enemies, or even the enemy trying to create terror against a specific group of people. Or all of the above. Suffice to say, the military defeat is likely very real, and desperation is high. Either so desperate to fight against one another within the "brotherhood", or desperation has been sensed by the enemy to trigger more targeted psycho threat with fewer military casualties. After all, the war was launched by only a small number of people in Ukraine and its master. Once these people and their cadets are removed from the scene, it will be a lot more difficult to continue the war.

In Chinese political philosophy, Mr. Putin's approach is closer to the "ways of king", while the typical American way in the last 30 years is the "ways of hegemony". The difference is mainly in the methods and tactics used being more humane (respecting other lives) or more of "my way and my way only". The former way is nice, but it takes a lot longer to reach the goals. Mr. Putin is no pussy, but indeed, he does not have very much time. If I were in his place, I would agree to some of the more "expedient" methods.

Boris Petrov's avatar

Ukraine horror was always US war against Russia - I don’t see any resemblance to China’s events

Nakayama's avatar

The similarity is the tactics are used when military defeat is imminent.

Hello there, Andrew. I wrote a justification of the Russian SMO in Ukraine but I don't know how strong it is as an argument. Is there any chance you could evaluate it?

Andrew Korybko's avatar

Hi Baron. I'm recovering from a serious illness and am already scaling back my work as it is so I can't take on anything additional. In any case, I recommend just publishing your work, learning from honest and well-intentioned feedback, and improving over time.

His 'Heil Hitlers,' his swastika banner parades, his racial hatred, the fact that he said he was a Banderite. Why don't you research him for yourself instead of asking a dumb question? You think the author is making this up?
