I, too, think that this narrative originates in Britain. The British are the masters of this kind of stories. Think of the Belgian children in WWI whose hands were chopped off by the Germans, the crucified Canadian soldiers, the giant soap factories where the Germans turned the bodies of their dead soldiers into soap, etc. Needless to say, that no Belgian child with cut-off hands was ever found after the war. The same goes for the other horror stories. But they had served their purpose: filling the allied soldiers and civilians with hatred towards the enemy.
I think that there is more poison to be found in the inventors of these narratives than in South American frogs, no matter how toxic they may be.
