It is interesting that Mr Korybko presents a binary choice for Armenian future as being Russia-friendly or Turkish-Azerbaijani protectorate, both loaded phrases with obvious intent signaling to Armenia that it better be Russia-friendly or else you are doomed.

Pashniyan’s folly was taking Russian support for granted while cozying up to the West, USA and France in particular. He and Armenia paid the price for ignoring geography. He forgot that incessant talk of getting closer to the West, the arch nemesis of Russia, could cost Armenia the Russian support so important for continuation of its decades long illegal occupation of internationally recognized Azerbaijani territory. So when Azerbaijan, with Turkish backing, used military force to retake Azerbaijani territory Russia paused, watched from the sidelines and offered no meaningful support to Armenia that Armenians had assumed will always be there. Russia only stepped in to get a ceasefire when things turned real bad for Armenia.

Russian influence in Armenia has turned a page and is unlikely to go back to the old days despite the binary choice Mr Korybko presents. Geography demands that Armenia and Turkey have good working relations for mutual benefit and ignoring it will be to Armenia’s peril
