The BRICS is just a talking shop like the African Union of the Organization of American States, or even less. The Belt and Road Initiative instead is a real thing because it is backed by PRC money and influence which is growing.
PRC, Korea-north, RF are instead re-forming a "second world" as part of Cold War II, with the PRC instead of the USSR as the senior member; but with the whole of eastern Europe (except for Belarus and that is for now) and most of west, south, central and east Asia in the USA "first world" sphere of influence (even if both the RF and PRC are trying to hold on to central Asia). Iran and India are very reluctantly partially aligned with RF and PRC because they feel threatened.
While in India there is a large USA fifth column most of the indian political elites have realized that after the PRC they will be the next target of the USA centuries-old standard approach of "surround, isolate, breakup" potential regional or global rivals: they have already noticed how the USA have "sponsored" to some degree the Pakistan and now the Bangladesh elites. So understandably they are trying to counter-balance that with their old soviet/russian partner of when they were "not-aligned".
Russia has set up an RCI Russia/China/India alliance which will of couse have Iran, North Korea, and just about all of ASIA except Israel in it RUSSIA + Ukraine are 50% of Europe. RUSSIA leads !!!

Apart from the long-term geo-strategy the obvious short-term purpose is to allow the russian navy to do long duration missions to protect tankers transporting russian oil from USA+EU piracy, oops I mean "policing", in the Indian ocean and around the straits of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb.
It is a bit a lopsided deal as in exchange the indian navy will get access to siberian ports which currently matter very little to it as passage west or east towards them is subject to USA navy control of the relevant choke points.
But I guess that eventually indian exports and imports could travel via the trans-Caspian and Chabahar route to karelian ports.
It is part of the "Great Game" where russian policy is trying to break their continental isolation and get access to the open warm seas, and really the same for the PRC which are surrounded west and south by the USA "first island chain".
The key elements here are for the RF access to the iranian-indian port of Chabahar via the trans-caspian route and for the PRC to the pakistani port of Gwadar via the Sinkiang-Baluchistan route.
The PRC is also trying to get access to the indian ocean via the burmese port of Kyaukphyu port and Sittwe port was an earlier candidate but it was taken over by indian interests. As a wild guess :-) the recent-ish USA sponsored coup in Bangladesh was about setting up a USA base on St. Martin's Island (which is still Bangladesh but opposite the Myanmar coast, near Sittwe and Kyaukphyu, surprise!).

That reminds me the game , I don't remember the name, where players , each in turn, stack little sticks of wood untill the pile collapse.
It must be very difficult for planners to make all possibilities at stake.
And it's even more difficult for the leaders to take decisions about the fake of their country with planners who never agree each other.
