I'm Brazilian, and I can say with certainty that Lula and the Workers' Party (PT) are not popular, even among voters. Another point is that Brazil is facing a very complicated internal situation, with a considerable risk of becoming like Venezuela. If the United States does not intervene, they may lose the influence they currently have in Brazil, because PT and Lula have a project aimed at distancing themselves from the U.S. and aligning with China.

Yes, it's already pretty subordinated to the West in general, but it still has traces of sovereignty that the US would prefer to eliminate once and for all.
