There is an old saying in China: it is the government that forces the people to rebel. In some rare situations, famines did cause rebellion and riots, but they did not last long. For the really bad ones, bad enough to shake or destroy dynasties, usually the government has to shoulder the bulk of the responsibility. I claim that many countries in the world had hoped for a prosperous and peaceful world after the end of the Cold War. The emerging economies were booming at incredible speeds. But starting from the NATO "intervention" in the former Yugoslavia, the elites that move the world have degraded themselves to the point that the Global South started to look for a way out. In China, Russia, and India, these smaller countries see hope.
I think the people of India and Iran really prefer to be neutral and quietly deal with their respective domestic problems. They have not fully appreciated the fact that their countries have been forced to the side of the cliff to make a binary decision: are you with us or not? Of course, there will always be dissidents. But I think the bulk of the people in these two countries will choose the BRICS side. In BRICS, there is no military alliance, only voluntary cooperation on economic and trade matters. I think the only common rule in BRICS is "no sanctions", and everything else is negotiable bilaterally. There is no "Russian Value" or "Chinese Exceptionalism" to deal with, no pressure on LGBTQX+?!#$ whatsoever.
The only thing that make oligarchs reasonable is fear.
That's all.
Western oligarchs feared communists to death, they fought communism to death BUT they allow a human face capitalism: New Deal, Keynes.
In France, in September 1944 we had a true social revolution. For only one reason: de Gaulle said to oligarchs( which shamefully collaborated with nazis) that if they don't sign the new social agreements( free health, retirement insurance, ect ..) he let them alone talk with french communist which dreamed to hang them. :)
The russian oligarch stopped or flee because they feared Poutine.
The chinese oligarchs try to buy a communist party faction but they fear the one that currently rules.
Since 1992, western oligarchy fear nothing and so requires EVERYTHING!!!
A slight modification: Such people do exist. Unfortunately, they are rarely in the government, now or then, here or there.
There was this minor Chinese businessman who was a peasant farmer but made enough money in trading agricultural products to venture into other businesses. The core was real estate. Instead of the more typical 2-3 story individual houses built by peasant farmers who "made it", he built dense 4-story apartments with guards, child care, senior care built-in, with almost all positions filled by residents. Doctors and nurses routinely visit this complex, and eventually, a nurse will come every day for a half-day shift. His company borrowed money from the bank and then resold the houses to residents using longer-term loans. The majority of the residents in the complex are peasants in the village. In the morning, they drop off the toddlers at the day care, and the senior citizens gather in the activity room for the seniors. Men rotate to serve as the gate guards. Eventually, he launched a private elementary school which was eventually taken over by the government. Instead of awarding him with a civil medal, the Chi-com sent him and family members into jail.
Or you can ask the founder of Costco about why he chose this specific model of business with very thin profit. Precisely because long-term government elites have little concern about the people, it is better to have a smaller government if the people can handle the tasks themselves.
Rare. Very rare. Look, in 1945, in Germany, at least hundreds of thousands bastards deserved to be , at least hanged. How many were punished by death? Less than 5000. How many prison more than 5 years ? Less than 10000.
Bastards are often smart and often have precious relations, some precious bargaining chip,
and always their passportS in their pocket. They often have their escape plans.
The fact that a country like India, so wildly and mercilessly colonized for centuries by a vicious master who played one against an other for ruling everybody, treated like a whore, which knew 2 millions death in an english organised famine in 1942, cut perversely in two separated lands ennemies in 1947, with 5 millions horrible death during partition, which is currently treated by West like a little bitch and the west industrial dump, the fact that folks in this land can think to the "good old time" of a kind and sincere West, let me without voice.
Are Indians completely dumb idiots, fool morons or masochists?
Or is Andrew talking only about some few oligarchs eager to gorge themselves even at the price of the slavery of their compatriots?, few thousands compradores and a population of 1,5 billons slaves.
(1) India has too deep a root in Hinduism. That religious root sometimes becomes a shackle. (2) India started its independence with a British-style government barely powerful enough to move a new country forward. In comparison, Mao kept China under tight control and bloody purges of the "old society" and "old culture" to the point that there is a large gap between modern China and China before 1949. That gap is larger in culture, custom, and general morality than in skyscrapers and bullet trains. (3) Indian oligarchs, like oligarchs everywhere, are loyal only to their money. I have looked at various countries after WW2, and it is difficult to find even one patriotic oligarch. There was one qualified to be called patriotic in China. However, he was nowhere close to super-rich. In US standards, it might be difficult to call him rich at all. Yet because he achieved a small patch of prosperity and comfortable lives for some poor and lower-middle-class Chinese, he and his entire family were persecuted and their assets nationalized.
France knew a lot of patriotic oligarchs. Really a lot. But actually they don't want to waste their wealth for what they consider as a dumb government.
The most famous of them is also the most wealthy and powerful: Rothschild. Napoleon like de Gaulle said that no family on earth did more for France than french Rothschild.
I don't know if it's still true or no.
They made the three last french presidents. And five of the 7 last.
Have you not noticed that it doesn't really matter who wins the election, the policies change only at the margins?
You can have corporate imperialist muppet Team R (more corny Eagle Flag Freedom talk) or corporate imperialist muppet Team D (same policies but more glib, self-serving and hypocritical human rights talk).
Trump’s Secondary Sanctions Threat: A Risky Gamble with India and Global Stability
As the 10-day ultimatum looms for Trump’s proposed secondary sanctions targeting Russia’s trade partners, Washington appears poised to pressure key countries into isolating Moscow—or face economic consequences themselves. Among these partners is India, a rising global power and indispensable player in the emerging multipolar world.
But attempting to subordinate India—by coercing compliance and then punishing it for strategic autonomy—risks accelerating a shift that Washington should be seeking to manage, not trigger. Treating India as a rival rather than a partner, simply for declining to align 100% with U.S. directives, reveals a Western failure to adapt to today’s realities.
This zero-sum approach will not succeed. India is unlikely to capitulate. On the contrary, heightened pressure could push Delhi closer to alternative blocs like BRICS+, expanding non-Western economic frameworks and further weakening the very Western dominance these sanctions aim to preserve. In short: coercion will backfire.
If the U.S. and its allies want to remain relevant in shaping global order, they must learn to treat partners like India as equals—not subordinates. Clinging to a fading unipolar mindset will only accelerate the West’s decline.
“In short: coercion will backfire.” That’s not a concept that Trump understands. He pictures himself as the biggest, meanest junkyard dog, and expects everyone to be afraid of him. He bares his teeth at Canada, and Carney folds. He bares his teeth at the European Union, and von der Leyden folds. But baring his teeth at the other multipolar global powers — Russia, China, and India — will only make them stronger. Remember, kicking Russia out of SWIFT, imposing “crippling “ sanctions, and confiscating Russian assets did not cause Russia to cower and capitulate. Nor will Trump’s “ultimatum” to Putin — be it 50 days, 10 more days, or whatever.
Trump’s tariffs, also known as import taxes on American consumers, has the effect of picking a fight with every other country in the world. It’s the same tactic that FDR used on Japan that led to America’s involvement in WWII. It will not end well for us.
India will fold. Its economy is completely reliant on the US and the West, especially its dominant outsourcing sector. The US can also light multiple independence "color revolutions" in India's fragile "national unity" .
Most comments here don't understand India. No government will commit political suicide by giving in to DT. Firstly a handful of greedy Bombay capitalists are not taken seriously. Everyone knows they have the money to flee.
For most Indians who stay in India, we don't trust the US. That's why as I have written here before- the government has patched up with China.
Expect counter tariffs on US products.
And take Brazil and China as a template. Not the West.
Keep relying on that BRICS alliance and see how far that gets you. Gold is nothing more than a store of value which is why paper money was created. By the way how much is one? Does anyone know? Digital money is here and why anyone would revert back to gold is stupid. There’s no bond market for it and it won’t materialize. Does anyone trust that China won’t just pull out for its own interests at the last second? Xi didn’t even go to Brazil when they had their last meeting why? Brazil had Modi there and used it as a State dinner which would’ve upstaged his visit. Yea, solid relationship with India. Give me a break. Read a financial publication sometime
Some idiots here are so stupid they are not worthy of responding to. Andrew has written a prescient piece and to ignoramuses making foolish remarks start by reading Indian history
I don’t need to. India still lives in a caste system. Modi is a piece of shit who does nothing but talk out of both sides of his mouth and barely has his position as it is. Go ahead FAFO and see how that works out for them. Real simple to pull American companies outta there and use Vietnam or Philippines. I couldn’t care less about India’s history. If it’s so great there why are so many in England or the US?
And you must consider the stop of service. Like Microsoft, Google or others. It's already a drama for indian rafineries wich work with Russia and are under sanctions.
Resisting for India would be a really very brave decision and a fierce act of sovereignty.
Actually, I think folks really have no memory. Must I remind you that India let its "eternal friend" Iran , die with open mouth few years ago when USA just frowned about little bizness between the two.
National pride. 😂😂😂😂
If India resist really and a long time( more than a month), I come back here and make you my most respectful apologies .
Iran was no eternal friend. It was a geopolitical handshake. If USA thinks it can crush India with stopping some services, do you think India will come to a standstill ? There are ways around everything and various options.
Though I don’t live or am a citizen of India, I follow a lot of their politics , businesses , industry, and try gaining knowledge from multiple sources.
In Pakistan/ India war , India was not fighting just Pakistan but Pakistan proxies USA, china , turkey, and information warfare from 3 Islamic countries who tried cyber attacks ( over 20,000 ) on various institutions .
Despite all that India brought Pakistan to its knees in 2 hr 43 min .
Pakistan awaks, USA and Chinese radars destroyed, their continental missile destroyed , multiple jets F16 ,J10 ,J17 destroyed and Pakistani begged for ceasefire.
Today’s India is not what it was a decade ago .
Remember Covid ? They said India won’t be able to produce a vaccine and vaccinate 1.4 billion people ?
India produced the vaccine without mRNA , and successfully vaccinated their citizens.
Harvard is teaching that operation as part of studies .
A war between India and Pakistan , it's like a war between USA and Mexico. India is a modern Powerful and still sovereign country, Pakistan is a third world countries ruled by abject compradores.
I don't deny the huge progress of India and its big regional position.
However.
What I see in India for years now in its relations with USA it's a cat in heat who shakes her ass. And in its relation with Russia, I see a sly and profteering grocer. A big fat turkey who think she is a tiger.
It's what I see in the boastings without tomorrows of Modi or his valiant roars...against dwarf and miserable neighbours.
“So Trump is going to put sanctions on India and China for buying Russian oil? I do not know who is advising Trump, but even threatening this type of action has already resulted in the formation of BRICS. Putting sanctions on India will be a huge mistake. As of mid-2024, India holds about $240 billion in U.S. debt, making it one of the top 15 foreign holders of U.S. Treasury securities. … At the same time, India has been adjusting its holdings of U.S. debt, though the available data does not explicitly state large-scale sales. India is promoting rupee-denominated borrowing (e.g., Masala Bonds) and deepening its sustainable debt market (now worth $55.9 billion) to reduce reliance on foreign currency debt. It appears that India is in a position to start dumping US debt if Trump dares to impose sanctions.” — Martin Armstrong
One thing all the Escobar's disciples hear should know before singing glory and strength of India is figures.
Figures of India GDP and export.
Total exports ( goods+services) is more than 20% of GDP. It huge. Three time more than China whose total exports represent 7% of GDP . On this 20%, US empire is more than 12%. 12% of India GDP depend on west exports. And it's just one of the numerous weapons at disposal of USA.
Great point. Western sanctions are putting India in a tough spot, forcing it to choose between Russia and its own growth. Instead of gaining control, the West is pushing India closer to Russia and China.
every country in the world should now calculate how much the trade with usa benefits me and how much they exploit me - i am not sure americans will learn anything until being boycotted by few dozen countries at once. the pressure on brics? bluff to disarm yourselves for the future economic annihilation.
I don't know what India is going to do, but the bigger question is: Why should America accept a one sided trading relationship? Just because we made mistakes with China and others, there is no need to keep allowing a bad, one-way practice going.
This sounds like trying to put the best spin on a bad situation.
Anyway, the Empire doesn't care whether India likes it or not, as long as it obeys. Moreover, the West continues to enjoy soft power, so watch Indian elites twist themselves into knots to try and justify their heroes.
Modi did this to himself. He came to Washington and glad handed Trump smiling for the cameras then went back home and reversed everything that was agreed to signaling he will do what’s best for India. Well, Trump is doing what’s best for the US and if India doesn’t wish to play ball then the US will shift to Pakistan. It’s really that simple. India enjoys the money it makes from migration of US companies manufacturing but goes and joins BRICS even with its forever distrust of China. Trump will make India shit or get off the pot. The days of enjoying US friendship and money for free are over. If you make a deal with Trump you are going to abide by it or face consequences. The free money train is over.
India, a secular country with a diverse religious base, is the world’s 4th largest economy, at $4.2 trillion GDP, and growing at 6.2% annually. Pakistan, an Islamic republic where Islam is the official state religion, has an economy a third of India’s, at $1.2 trillion GDP, and growing at 2.6% annually.
Sorry to break it to you, but Trump is not God, and if India does not want to capitulate, simply saying “His will be done” will not work.
Have you been reading Andrew’s column daily? Plus you realize California is # 6 and Texas is close behind on those numbers you spout. India needs America to keep growing at those numbers. They will deal. You betting against Trump after what he just did to the EU? I’m not.
There is no trade deal with the EU. In order for there to be a deal, the EU parliament has to vote on it, then EVERY parliament from every country in the EU has to vote for it. Right now, all he's got is an agreement with von der Leyen — who is hanging on to her political life by a string. This "deal" will just quietly die. But by then MAGAbots will have convinced themselves it really happened, and that's all that counts to Trump.
But in your defense, you genuinely have no idea what’s happening. When your entire identity is staked on pretending things are going great, denial becomes a survival instinct. It’s easier to play along than admit you got conned.
I’ve no issue admitting when I’m wrong. If the EU deal falls through that fine too. Europe produces nothing and if they keep screwing out tech companies I’d love for them to pull out of Europe even for just a few days and watch their individual countries burn to the ground. Trump has already secured deals with Japan and S.Korea plus others. The US had a surplus last months for the first time in decades. The indoctrination factories of Columbia U is getting their shit together. Harvard is clamoring for a same deal. He is destroying the globalists hold on America and regardless of the EU deal falls through I’ll take the 20% across the board
“I’ll take the 20% across the board.” You obviously don’t realize that Trump’s tariffs are actually an import tax on American consumers, meaning you’ll PAY “20% across the board” for every import you buy. If other countries were paying the tax, as he and his MAGAbots claim, why would his folks be talking about a $600 “tariff rebate”?
I’m done responding to you, James. No point in interacting with someone that’s mindlessly parroting Trump’s lies.

Of course. What does anyone propose to do about it?
Moral arguments are wasted on sociopaths. It's like quoting Bible verses to an armed robber.
A slight modification: Such people do exist. Unfortunately, they are rarely in the government, now or then, here or there.
There was this minor Chinese businessman who was a peasant farmer but made enough money in trading agricultural products to venture into other businesses. The core was real estate. Or you can ask the founder of Costco about why he chose this specific model of business with very thin profit. Precisely because long-term government elites have little concern about the people, it is better to have a smaller government if the people can handle the tasks themselves.
IIRC, the founder of Costco claims at least to use the policies he does for purely business and not humanitarian reasons.
Right up until the people liquidate their “nobodies” …
You must read "Animal Farm" of Orwell. He explain that very good.
In France, before 1789, we have hard aristocracy , monarchy and clergy.
Revolution and since 1792 we had horrible despots widely worst than the formers.
Look at how Lénine, Staline or Trotsky were treated by authorities before 1917 and the way they governed after...
Idem in China with mad Mao.
I don't know none occurence of a violent seizure of power( révolution, coup) turn better for people.
I didn't say the outcome would be good -- just that the "nobodies" sometimes get it in the neck
Rare.
They rarely do, and all that happens is a new set of oligarchs.
Astonishing.

On De Gaulle: NOT TRUE. The Rothschild with Pompidou assaulted De Gaulle in 1968. With CIA SIS organizing the color revolution.
I don't allow you to treat me a liar.
And if yes?
Perhaps( not sure and it seem you make confusion between events of 68 and referendum of 69)
So what?
De Gaulle didn't say Rothschild did more than everybody for de Gaulle, he said that they did more than everybody for France.
You see the shade?
1. The oligarchs are the only ones who matter. Same as in any country.
2. We have talked before of western soft power.

India bought oil from Russia and processed it, sold petrol , diesel , aviation fuel, oil to Europe .
India already has market for those products in Africa and South Asia.
USA knows that it is losing proxy war with Russia, so trying to Russia indirectly . Don’t have guts to tell China that ! Or Japan !

There is dream. And there is reality.
Great point. Western sanctions are putting India in a tough spot, forcing it to choose between Russia and its own growth. Instead of gaining control, the West is pushing India closer to Russia and China.
It's not a choice between Russia and growth.
It's a choice between sovereignty and submission.
every country in the world should now calculate how much the trade with usa benefits me and how much they exploit me - i am not sure americans will learn anything until being boycotted by few dozen countries at once. the pressure on brics? bluff to disarm yourselves for the future economic annihilation.
I don't know what India is going to do, but the bigger question is: Why should America accept a one sided trading relationship? Just because we made mistakes with China and others, there is no need to keep allowing a bad, one-way practice going.
Thank you for the joke of the day. 😂😂
This sounds like trying to put the best spin on a bad situation.
Anyway, the Empire doesn't care whether India likes it or not, as long as it obeys. Moreover, the West continues to enjoy soft power, so watch Indian elites twist themselves into knots to try and justify their heroes.
EDIT: stupid autocorrect.
“the US will shift to Pakistan”? LOL
I’m not.
“what he just did to the EU” Yet another LOL.
The trade deal with Japan was also fake:

“I’ll take the 20% across the board.” You obviously don’t realize that Trump’s tariffs are actually an import tax on American consumers, meaning you’ll PAY “20% across the board” for every import you buy. If other countries were paying the tax, as he and his MAGAbots claim, why would his folks be talking about a $600 “tariff rebate”?
I’m done responding to you, James. No point in interacting with someone that’s mindlessly parroting Trump’s lies.
