Well, let's get real here. Russia's primary goal for Southwest Asia is stability, which is usually easier to achieve when there's this thing so alien to US Empire foreign policy for the last 20+ years--Peace.

Plus the Russians are just a bit busy right now and really don't need more deadly bullshit coming at them from either Islamists or Zionists. Neither Putin nor Lavrov are stupid enough to believe that UN Resolution 242's two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine Conflict can ever work. The Israelis killed that possibility long ago, just like the apartheid white South Africans did before them.

No, the only possible solution short of utterly destroying one side or the other is a secular state with ironclad religious freedom and majority rule, also similar to what happened in South Africa. There can never be any peace so long as Zionism has any political power. States based on ethnic purity are never peaceful neighbors.

Of course, Putin can't come out and say that right now because that would just add fuel to the US Empire's fire. Going with the internationally recognized UN position is the safe play, and right now it is the smart play.

Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, Metternich, Talleyrand, Franklin, all the diplomatic greats would approve.
