"...save his own life and that of those who he misled..."

He 'misled' himself. It's the fog of war in his head, and the resulting confusion in communication between heart and mind: слишком громко — желание слушать медные трубы превыше всего проглошает всю ясность сумбра, которая спасла на войне, в башке, или в сердце — не понятно, as he himself might say, were he able to find a window through the fog to do so. Personally, I rather suspect he won't, but only time will tell.

Not that I'd want to create an idol or icon, but compare with Putin. See what I mean? It tells you a lot about attitudes — the way the life is lived — like adults understand themselves well enough to know they can't indulge in self-gratification immediately — sometimes you have to wait and trust, like faith. Funny, the way gut feelings are informed.

I feel so sorry for Putin. He tried, and continues to try, so hard and has done, and continues to do, so well; his kindness and wisdom fuelling the envy inspiring the dogs of war.

God, give the man strength.

"...This outcome was the result of pragmatic improvisation, not prior planning..."

Yes.

"...those well-intended but naïve members of the AMC..."

You worry about them too much. They're only masturbating. It doesn't go anywhere.

And if it inspires others to follow suit, it's no great loss.
