To be fair, nothing Putin could say or do would shake the faith neither of russiagate conspiracy theorists, nor of alt-media types who think Putin and/or Trump has some eleven-dimensional chess plan.

Anyone who examines Trump's last time in office can see that he didn't do what he said he would, just like every other candidate. We ought to have learned from four years of "no one home" that the post is a cardboard figure upon which the opinions of the world are pinned while actual policy comes from elsewhere--deep state--if you will. It is likely that a certain poster figure is chosen to be the desired "flavor" to be projected mostly to appease general sentiment. Certainly, Russian leadership essentially ignores this & goes on about its plans. This is especially true now that confidence has been gained since breaking (being forced from) from the west.

Excellent insight.

I for one do not believe Putin would ever get involved in the US election either way, but to come out and publicly support Harris is preposterous. He knows nothing will change no matter who is in the powerless White House.

Yes, but just playing the game. Everyone (supposedly) is breathlessly asking "who do you want???" So, he indicates. He already said in interview that he noticed US presidents have no power.

It's easier to confront the Bush Obama Biden Kamala Deep State politicians as all they have is military defeats in foreign forever wars...

Why it's better for world peace of Kamala 'wins' as there is no guarantee there will be either fair or free elections or another successful assasination or even the locking up of Trump....

Your assessment of Putin’s preferences is well-thought and aptly written. But his preferences will have had nothing to do with a public action like endorsing a candidate. He knows his endorsement will embarrass whichever candidate receives it. Why did he choose to embarrass the Democrats? —that’s the question I would like to hear you speculate about.

"To be sure, Putin has signaled that he’s open to compromising, but what Trump has in mind is to coerce a compromise from both him and Zelensky."

This has always been the only alternative to perpetual or global nuclear war in Ukraine. Some sort of negotiated settlement where both sides kind of save face, given the situation on the ground. This is not impossible, but increasingly unlikely.

It needs to include some sobriety on the part of the US/Europe. It needs to settle once and for all the question of Eastern Ukraine. It needs to address the Eastward push of NATO. It needs to do all this in a way which is palatable for both Western and Russian audiences, even if begrudgingly. That starts with a Trump presidency.

Maybe he thinks he’ll get more laughs with Kamala.

The so-called Deep State needs their designated enemies, no matter who wins.
