He wanted to dispel whatever doubts some undecided voters might still have about his ties to Russia by reminding them that he imposed sanctions against that megaproject, which debunked the Democrats’ Russiagate claims and were even hypocritically waived by Biden for a nine-month period.
"...risk[ed] undermining a critical alliance with Germany..."
No, yeah, gotta be — far better to blow it up; they're gonna love that! Eternal slavery — no economy at all, or move all your factories to Yankee Doodle Land — who could resist or refuse such a generous offer? 'You're gonna love it: zero risk and the world's best workers forever! What could possibly go wrong?'
And the Europeans, specifically Germans, will fall at Trump's feet to beg him not to abandon NATO, so what if Trump is boasting he torpedoed (pun intended) the very source of cheap energy. I am sure the out-of-job Volkswagen workers will give Trump a Nazi salute for being such a good friend.
Given the fact that Russiagate was a hoax, concocted by the Hillary Clinton campaign, and the fact that the Trump administration escalated tensions in Ukraine by pouring ever more weapons into the country, the idea that Trump was ever a Putin puppet is laughable. But Americans generally are susceptible to propaganda ("we're a peace-loving democracy"), and easily fooled.
Pouring weapons into Ukraine began prior to Trump. When Trump tried to delay funding for sending weapons to Ukraine, he was impeached and told this funding was mandated by Congress. Of note, his "interference" in The Ukraine project was exposed by the Ukrainian Alexander Vindman.
Yes, the U.S. had been arming Ukraine for some time. But the grounds for Trump's impeachment was abuse of power, not for "delaying funding" to Ukraine. He was more than happy to send weapons and money to Kiev, but he made it contingent on the Zelensky regime conducting an investigation into the shady dealings of Joe and Hunter Biden in that country. That brought down the wrath of the Democrats in Congress, who initiated the impeachment proceedings. Trump is as corrupt as the day is long, but he's got a lot of company clear across the U.S. political spectrum. The whole rotten system is corrupt.
Trump was always too defensive about the entire Russian collusion narrative. I have a conspiratorial suspicion that Clinton was terrified that payments flowing through Clinton Global Initiative, particularly for CIFIUS approval of Russian uranium mining investments, would be tied back to Russia. Trump could've done himself a lot of good by using his power to figure that out. (I add that Mr Putin could have exposed her and others also.) I also suspect a lot of what Trump said then (and now), and some of what he did, was his way of trying to get along with psychotic neocons who seem to live under every rock in Wash DC.
Having said that, Tom Luongo argues the Ukraine project, while failing in its primary mission of raping Russia, has had a secondary effect of neutering some of the malign influence of European oligarchs and the City of London on the US. Luongo observes that the Ukraine project and the FED's simultaneous action to drain the global economy of Eurodollars by taking the power to price eurodollars away from City of London has subverted a globalist, "Davos" initiative to "take back its former colony."
Luongo lives in a very complicated world, so he may be making connections nobody ever intended, but minimally his take is original and interesting. Nobody is seriously critiquing his ideas so there may be inconsistencies, but not for want of challenge by him.
The reality is that western Europe is presently appears to be in a huge financial mess. UK finances are precarious, with the Gilt under extreme pressure, while the rest of western Europe appears to be spent and uncompetitive. It doesn't seem too crazy to speculate about the end of the European Union at this point.
Luongo is searching for clues about what is happening to European capital as an indication of what might happen next. If history is a guide, something will break to stimulate abandoning debt and introducing new currency.
I do think there is truth to be found in the nexus of geopolitics and global finance, especially at time of great turmoil like now. This greatly complicates the problem of figuring out reality and speculating what may be coming next.
Neither of us know what was in Trump's head. We do know he is anti-war and that he was aware of the Ukraine plan and took action to impede. The idea he was impeached for abuse of power is simply laughable.
This will not dispel the russiagate conspiracy theory. Those who want to believe will continue to believe, facts and evidence be damned, for humans are masters at cognitive dissonance.
Hell, a President Trump could push The Button, and even as they went up in a mushroom cloud, russiagate conspiracy theorists would insist that this was on Putin's orders, and besides, Harris would havew pushed The Button sooner and better.
