Kiev’s US-Assisted Missile Strike On Makeyevka Reinforces Concerns About Russian Planning

It’s inexplicable why someone didn’t realize how risky it was to assemble so many troops in one place so close to the front lines and in close proximity to incendiary ammunition while allowing them to get their guard down celebrating New Year’s. The US is providing real-time geospatial intelligence to its Ukrainian proxies to hone the effectiveness of their anti-Russian strikes, something that the Kremlin was already aware of long ago, yet a thus-far unknown military official on the ground didn’t take this strategic fact seriously.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that Kiev carried out a major attack against its forces right after midnight on New Year’s Day. US-supplied HIMARS missiles struck a temporary housing area used by the Russian Armed Forces and ended up killing 63 servicemen. This reinforces those general concerns about Russian planning that became obvious by mid-November following the partial pullback from Kherson Region and abruptly turned acute after Kiev’s drone strike spree deep inside Russia in early December.  

Honestly speaking, so many troops shouldn’t have ever been assembled in one place, let alone so close to the front lines and not to mention reportedly within close proximity to lots of incendiary ammunition. Moreover, while it’s understandable that they wanted to celebrate the New Year, their superiors should have in hindsight exercised better judgement than to have had them drop their guard during that time. Not only that, but only two out of six HIMARS missiles were intercepted, which was also disappointing.

What the abovementioned observations go to show is that there still remain some serious problems with Russian planning over ten months since the onset of its special operation. It’s unclear how or when they’ll be resolved, but nobody should doubt that the authorities are now trying their utmost to rectify them seeing as how quickly they acknowledged the latest attack instead of remained silent like they did when the partial pullback from Kharkov Region first started in mid-September.

Moscow has repeatedly reminded everyone that its opponents are entirely backed by NATO, meaning that the Kremlin shouldn’t have been surprised by the Washington Post’s recent report revealing that “The Ukrainians would outline the types of high-value targets they were looking for in an area, and the United States would use its vast geospatial intelligence apparatus to respond with precise locations.” They should have already taken for granted that the US is involved in every one of Kiev’s missile strikes.

The failure to intercept more of its opponent’s missiles is somewhat understandable since the science behind it is always difficult to pull off even with the best air defense systems, but everything else raises very uncomfortable questions.

That necessitates an urgent investigation into why the Makeyevka attack was practically “allowed” to happen since it’s symbolic of the deep concerns about persistent problems with Russian planning. Until they’re resolved, more such incidents are expected to take place, which is unacceptable for a self-respecting state like Russia. It should thus be assumed that the authorities have already quietly begun to dig into the details of this event with a view towards averting others in the coming future.
