Your suspicions have been confirmed, Andrew, as they should have been when the US supported Lula against Bolsenaro. Moreover, Lula’s choice of Buenos Aires in which to make such an utterance is no coincidence - it speaks to America’s determination to break up BRICS, given Argentina’s application to join that organisation. And, as we speak, the US is applying similar pressure to South Africa. Next stop will be even more pressure on India.

The terrorist acts of last January 8 demonstrate how fragile President Lula's position is. Internally, the American deep state uses Brazil's traditional backward forces to reduce Lula's room for manoeuvre. While at the same time, pushes him to somehow align his geopolitical view towards that of Washington's. We have to bear in mind the US still considers the whole LatAm is his own backyard and will not tolerate any movement towards the multipolar world that shines in the horizon. The decaying empire is willing to fight in many fronts in order to avoid the rise of a multipolar world order, let's see how this battle in LatAm will be fight by the BRICS countries.

As Admiral Tirpitz said, battleships first purpose is to stay afloat, so Brazilians leaders first purpose is to stay alive. He would have cleared that statement with Putin.

There is no BRICS led confrontation with the west or USA. Russia cannot drag other countries into a war it foolishly began. Let Russia get out from Ukraine then we can talk about BRICS co-operation. BRICS will continue to be a useless group until the likes of criminal leaders like Putin are no more.

A tiny part of me worried about this. He cut a deal with US, I suspected. I wanted to doubt it because of Bolsonaro and that Lula was a BRICS founder. My only hopes currently was BRICS.

I just read another article on the subject, which shows that Lula's speech was more in defense of Venezuela, and criticizing the blockade... In other words, Lula offended Biden more than Putin!

But it could also have been an indirect message, a condemnation of the US attack on Venezuela: "OK, Russia attacks Ukraine, but you attack Venezuela!"

I'd hope he's just being pragmatic. It almost balances out his declaration of creating a common LA currency.
