This is not a reply to Mr. Gelles, who is right, but needs to take into accout the horror perpetrated by Hamas on Saturday and after. i just saw an interview on MSNBC of Senator Cory Booker, who had been in Israel at the time of the attack. He was there to negotiate a plan for the Palestinians as part of the treaty with Saudia Arabia and Israel. Apparently the Saudies were requiring this as a condition of signing the treaty. It, as well as the significant anniversary, explains the timing of the attack, which Hamas had been working on for a very long time. Hamas does not want peace. They only want to kill Israelis and destroy Israel. That is why they have undermined previous efforts at reaching peace. Right now, however, it is the Israelis who are committing the war crimes. That is exactly what Hamas wanted them to do. The heinous and gratuitously barbarous nature of the Hamas attack on Israel was deliberate. That is why they were filming it as they went. They wanted to provoke a disproportionate attack by Israel on Gaza. They don't give a fuck for the lives of their own people. Israel needs to stop giving Hamas was they set out to get and declare a cease fire immediately.

Your understanding(?) of this asymmetrical conflict needs to be revised politically and morally. It is deeply flawed based on its reliance on the "realpolitik" considerations of the Russian ruling class, which are not based on human considerations. Palestinians have been subjected to ethnic cleansing by terror and murder of civilians for over 75 years. The Zionists are now applying the Hitlerite "Leningrad" policy of starvation to the people of Gaza. Gaza has been the contemporary Guernica many times over. Why don't you think like a human being instead of a robot?
