I am pessimistic: I see no way out for Bangladesh. If they just keep on pursuing so-called American-style democracy and continue to drift toward orthodox Muslim (with similar trends in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei) Please watch and compare two groups of nations in southeast Asia for their longer term development: those on the Eurasia continent are mostly Buddhists. Those on the ocean's side are mostly Muslim (due to historical migration patterns) The odd one is Philippine (I think Catholic north and Muslim south). Singapore is multi-ethnic, but the geography is so tight and bind them together -- to the point that people there have no other choice but to cooperate.

Why am I not surprised that religion-based authoritarianism and pro-West sentiment goes hand-in-hand in Bangladesh too?
