I don't think even the good old USA can make Putin and Russia do something that harms their national security or leaves it wide open to a resumption of this dirty war the west wanted and gave birth to. Putin wants better relations with the US (and Europe too), but not at the cost of its vital security interests. Too many dead soldiers now for one of the parties to provoking the war to step in and decide how it will end. And the US does NOT have good options -- by now a big part of America has had it with our permanent war and if Trump goes back to throwing billions of USD down the corrupt hole of Ukraine, there will be a political price to be paid and it won't be small.

The only way to break the deadlock is for Trump to force either a referendum or an election on Ukraine to put Russia’s peace terms directly to the Ukrainian people. That would get rid of Zelenskyy and allow the two sides to start to rebuild their relationship with each other.
