"...Russia might punish him by not letting him to live out the rest of his days in Moscow if he’s overthrown, let alone evacuate him if the need arises."

Jeez, Assad, you wanna cut a deal, man: you DO NOT want to end up in somewhere like post-Biden Wokelandia London. It is NOT what it was when you studied/worked here only a couple-three decades ago! It doesn't have to be Moscow: there are loads of wonderful places just as alluring, and perhaps even more comfortable for their welcome, throughout Russia. Why not try Vladivostok? The Far East is only just starting to warm up now. It would be great for your kids (and their kids). Foggy Albion and the rest of EurWOKEia, on the other hand, are well into terminal decline now.

As an outsider, I think the best way is for Assad to soften up and conciliate. He likely will get back Allepo and Hama. He might squeeze out some oil royalty from Kurds area. But Assad would still control Damascus and have sea access around the Russian naval base. His condition for settlement, however, should be a joint pressure from pan-ME to get the Americans out. There he would get a smaller oil field, better communication path to Iraq and Iran; and obtained time to rebuild his army. Since (one of) the elite division is supposedly lead by his own brother, the corruption in te SAA is likely deep. If Assad is an able administrator or true nationalist, then he can focus on making the Syria he still controls to be better and more prosperous than the other parts. Other than Moscow, he probably can find some other place to exile if he chooses. However, Russia would then have a legal problem: wihout a proper governmet n Syria, how do Russians justify their naval base in Syria?
