This exists another facet to this matter, which immediately disqualifies the US as a mediator/ negotiator.

Both Ethiopia and Egypt are BRICS members and having the US as mediator would be tantamount to making a Wolf the Shepherd, as it serves Chump's agenda to continue and exacerbate the dispute between Ethiopia and Egypt, as Chump applies his "divide and conquer" strategy between BRICS members in order to weaken BRICS.

No doubt as per yoir assessment Chump is currently playing "Devil's Advocate" at the outset.

It is time for bpth Russia and China to start playing a more proactive roll in mediating disputes, especially where it incolves BRICS members/ partners, as both have shown their capabilities in this regard.

Maybe it's time to consider trying South Africa as mediator in such rolls too, aided by China and Russia.

Pardon my ignorance, but I can't fathom why Egypt doesn't have the forsight to propose to Ethiopia a project that makes the Nile navigable to barge traffice to ease their sea access. Egypt would gain more influence through honey than viniger, including over Sudan.
