As one of those Westerners who opposed NATO expansion all along, my only surprise is at the restraint showed by the Russians, not by the failure of the foredoomed Ukrainian counteroffensive. Clearly, the Russian leadership wants to avoid a nuclear war.

There is a domestic American political factor that you have not mentioned--the Maui wildfire and the lackadaisical response by the federal government. This could well be Joe Biden's Katrina moment.

That's when Bush's popularity really started to drop, not when his lies about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq were revealed. Biden's announcement that he was sending $700 in aid per household in Maui the same day his administration called for another $20 billion in Ukraine will not be forgotten.

This WILL affect American foreign policy. It's just a matter of time now. You should pay attention to this.

And Biden will do what he has famously done when our South Vietnamese and Afghan Allies failed and the people of Lahaina found themselves burned out of home and hearth: he turns his back, walks away and says .”Eff emm!”
