This is newsworthy not only because it’s a complete reversal of the Lithuanian President’s earlier position, but also because it contradicts the rhetoric pushed by neighboring Poland’s ruling party ahead of the 15 October national elections.
NATO has been an important part of their policy and economy for many years. Such confusion is inevitable as it starts to disintegrate. They'll come to terms and learn how to deal with it in due course. Acknowledgement, even if it's only of confusion and a seeming (pretending) lack of understanding, is a good thing — the first step.

Yeah, I can certainly sympathise with him about the confusion: wow, it's hard to know which end of his statements to chase first (poor guy)! The 'newsworthy' part is clear (And, 'Oh, how very true!') — a good sign.
