Medvedev has played a similar role vis-a-vis Putin for many years. Here, he lets the rest of the world know in no uncertain terms that Russia is angered by the criminal Israeli strike without signaling any potential military intervention by Russia itself, such as a similar statement from Putin could have implied.
Ironically, Medvedev was the Russian president "the West could work with" or so it was thought when he briefly held the office in 2008-2012.
I can't quite figure out his role. Deputy Chief of the National Security Council doesn't sound like much, though I guess he is still "on the team." And the attack-dog stuff is almost comical in its exaggerated pugnacity sometimes. Not sure whether he is supposed to play to Russians who think Putin is too cautious and accommodating or to the West, showing that even "moderates" are four-square behind Putin.
I see no reason to believe these assassinations were not conducted without the knowledge, approval and even support of Western Intelligence Agencies. These agencies the CIA and MI6 include the NSA and GCHQ (who together plus the “Five Eyes” run the Global Surveillance Network) all operate at the service of Israel to enforce US hegemony in Western Asia. If Israel intends a regional war its calculus must include the active support of Western States the US UK and EU which is confirmation of Dmitry Medvedev’s prognosis.
If the Kremlin had followed Medvedev's advice in 2014, recognized both the Donetsk and Luhansk Peoples' Republics referenda, annexed both republics, bolstered their armies with insinuated Russian troops, ala' Crimea, and not fallen for the ruse of the "Minsk Accords," promoted by John Kerry, meant only for the West to buy time to arm Ukraine to the teeth, according to Angela Merkel, the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, would never have happened, as Russian ownership of the Donboss, and perhaps more territories, including Odessa, would by now be a ten year old fait accompli. Paul Craig Roberts and many others, including Medvedev, made this sensible argument even before fascist troops of the junta regime in Kiev were a serious threat to all ethnic Russians in the eastern and southern oblasts.
I agree with Medvedev, the time for this war is now and it’s our only hope for a peace to emerge in the next 50 years. I believe that the timing for this will never be better than this moment. The US has no president and the war cabinet are all loyal to Israel and Ukraine. They are not loyal to the US and will gladly permanently destroy what’s left of its international reputation as well as what’s left of its military capabilities in the coming wars. There are almost no brakes on the US and Israel now and even though the US knows that they cannot defeat Iran and Hizbullah without mass casualties and destruction of ME bases and sunken warships, and that attacking Iran may bring Russia into the fray, Israel’s desperate position dictates a hopelessly reckless roll of the dice at this moment. The Houthis have already fatally damaged the Israeli economy, and they have not even used any actual Iranian anti shipping missiles. Gaza is on the brink of mass starvation and by assassinating their negotiation counterpart Israel has now quite strongly indicated that they do not seek peace or negotiations. A delay in the broad resolution of this conflict dooms Gaza to starvation and worse, but a full scale war could occupy and degrade the Israeli ability to continue the genocide. Iran, Russia, China, and North Korea have never been as closely aligned, and when the sparks fly in the Middle East, the US and NATO ISR assets will move from focusing on Ukraine to Iran. This will be an irresistible opening for China and Russia in Taiwan and Ukraine, and could see a rapid resolution of both of those conflicts. Israel, Iran, and Hizbullah will trade blows on a large scale and as Israel takes the inevitable damage they may resort to the Samson option of nukes, forcing Iran to target Dimona which will end Israel and probably the Palestinians as well. Iran can absorb orders of magnitude greater punishment, both economically and militarily, than Israel. Even many nukes, and the pent up anger at the US for nuking Japan will come out of the entire world against Israel, cementing its legacy as a rabid racist terrorist state. EIran very well may already have a nuclear device and if nuked by Israel they will cross the nuclear threshold very quickly.
It’s almost funny how Israel and the west have guaranteed themselves this outcome. They dreamt up an Axis of Evil where there was none, demonized those proud cultures, and poof, lo and behold there is an axis of evil. They imagined that an alliance between Russia and China could doom them, then lashed out relentlessly at Russia and China, and poof, Russia and China have been driven together.
By the time the dust settles there will be a peace. Many will die and after it’s all done there will stand the golden billion, totally discredited in the eyes of the world, their ordnance exhausted, and then the sanctions will be levied and they will have drunk from their own medicine in all that they have dealt to the rest of the world for the last century. And they will realize that they have brought it on themselves.
Or the way may prove that they have 2 brain cells left to run together and tell Israel to fight its own suicidal war against the whole world.

I think he’s Putin’s man, doing whatever is required at the time, but that’s just a guess. I have no inside knowledge of Kremlin politics.
