This is pure madness. It is clear that all of Macron's agitation has nothing to do with any deterrence of Russia. It responds only, on one hand, to the militarization and federalization of the EU in the chimeric hope of gaining some autonomy from the USA and to invent a unifying element through the prospect of an imaginary enemy. On the other hand, within the EU, these sterile nuclear gestures (the missiles launched by Rafales have a range of only 300 km, and the survival time of a Rafale in Russian airspace is measured in seconds) are nothing more than internal power play, where France now has only the nuclear weapon as a lever of power against Germany (for now, Poland is only an arbiter, not a leader). That said, all this is extremely dangerous and makes a country already under harassment, which possesses 5,000 nuclear warheads, nervous...

Beyond that, what terrifies me is the total absence of reaction in France among politicians, media, and intellectuals to this total heresy, which is probably anti‑constitutional. France finds itself in the same state of mind that led it to its worst disasters — arrogance, boastfulness, and recklessness. 1812, 1914, 1939... Pure madness.

France has just announced that it has seized another Russia connected oil tanker in the western Mediterranean. So Macron is doubling down. Interestingly it is under a Madagascan flag. Madagascar recently ejected the former French colonialists who have an appalling history there and currently favor Russia. Two birds with one stone? Interesting game of chicken. Meanwhile German business men are in Kaliningrad talking business...
